Medici Minutes - Issue #29

Gm,

Your time is valuable, let’s get to the Minutes.

Minute # 1 - Human One lands in Hong Kong

To create the bridge between traditional and digital art, we need exhibitions that melt trad art minds

So I am loving Ryan Zurrer exhibiting Beeple’s Human One sculpture at M+ Museum in Hong Kong

If you recall, this piece was sold at Christie’s for $29m back in Nov 2021.

I feel this piece shows the power of the digital canvas like no other, always moving, always evolving. Like the art world itself.

Minute # 2 - XCOPY szn

I’ve long talked about the power of editions to create a community around an artist.

And few have done a better job of creating a passionate group of holders than the glitch god himself

I loved what XCOPY did with Grift Bar for the one year anniversary of Grifters

You could call it “utility”… but I think of it as UNITY. As it united holders as part of a special group.

And the more passionate holders an artist has, the more who are spreading the work to new patrons.

X has been on a roll recently, announcing yesterday a collab where holders of Max Pain could access a special background for their Moonbird.

Not to mention 3 lovely drops with Noble Cards, 6529 Meme Cards, and another 2 for his discord

Minute # 3 - Maybe we’re too early

I couldn’t help but laugh…

ARTnews just released their list of 25 defining artworks of the year

And 0 works minted on chain made the list!

Now, if this isn’t a sign we’re early, I don’t know what is

My prediction is that within the next 5 years, more than half of the defining works of each year will be created by digital artists (and minted on-chain!)

And let’s face it… even those created off chain, could use an on-chain tracking system, no?

Counterfeiters are getting better and better. But blockchain fixes that.

Minute # 4 - Are pfps back?

Not sure, I find the 1/1 and gen art so much more exciting these days, that I don’t pay as much attention!

I’m curious to see how you are feeling though. Are pfps ded? Are they back? Are you still following pfp drops, or more into the 1/1 scene these days? Shout at me on twitter #mediciminutes and let me know if your sentiment has changed.

Minute # 5 - Experiences > exhibitions

There are a few things we could learn from our trad art frens

Perhaps #1 on the list:

How fine art is displayed

When you walk into a museum to see a large canvas hanging in an otherwise empty room, you immediately feel the importance. Even if you know little about the artist or artwork

And going to a museum is an experience. You plan days & dates around it.

Now, displaying art is something the digital art community is still playing catch up on.

Even today, many exhibitions are showing square art on rectangle TVs. I’ve been guilty of it myself!

But displays are key to making digital art exhibitions an experience.

So I wanted to highlight a fellow patron, Pablo Fraile, for bringing to life one of the most innovative digital art experiences we have seen yet

At Basel Miami, Pablo commissioned Random International to create an immersive experience where visitors collaborated with the installation to create a looped video, which they could mint and collect on chain.

Now, this is how digital art should be done...bravo!

Gm, My many musings, in Minutes. Let’s begin… Minute # 1 - The Secret to Stand Out Collabs In 1984, art dealer Bruno Bischofberger made an introduction that would change contemporary art forever. Over lunch, Bruno introduces his dear fren Andy Warhol to a new artist he recently discovered: Jean-Michel Basquiat. Now, this was back in the 80s… Warhol had already reached the pinnacle of contemporary art, and critics might even say he was on the way down. And young Jean-Michel was not yet the...
